  17. <p>     Remember the HUD scandal? After spending two years and $4
  18. million, special prosecutor Arlin Adams last week landed his
  19. first indictment of a former top department official: Lance
  20. Wilson, once executive assistant to ex-Secretary of Housing and
  21. Urban Development Samuel Pierce. Citing Wilson on 24 counts of
  22. fraud, conspiracy and false statements, a federal grand jury
  23. charged him with conspiring, after he left HUD for an investment
  24. firm, to steer $46 million in grants intended for poor urban
  25. areas to three housing projects developed by his business
  26. partner, Texan Leonard Briscoe.

  28. <p>     Adams has been criticized for moving too slowly in
  29. investigating charges of influence peddling at HUD in the Reagan
  30. era. Sources say he is far from handing down decisions on other
  31. major players at HUD, including Pierce and former executive
  32. assistant, Deborah Gore Dean. Meanwhile, Dean, who allegedly
  33. awarded millions in grants to politically well-connected
  34. Republican consultants, has opened an antiques shop in
  35. Georgetown to help pay her lawyers.
